Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator cover hospital doctors and GPs?
Yes — it covers all UK hospital doctor grades (Foundation Year 1 and 2, Internal Medicine Training, Core Training, Specialty Training ST1–ST8, SAS Specialty Doctor and Specialist, and Consultants) plus salaried GPs on the BMA model contract. GP partners (who receive a profit share rather than a salary) are not covered.
Which contracts and pay years does it use?
Hospital resident doctors in England are on the 2016 contract with 5 Nodal Points. Scotland still uses a 10-point grade structure; Northern Ireland uses the legacy 2002 contract; Wales is transitioning to a new spine system from 1 August 2026. Consultants use the 2003 / 2004 contracts. Pay figures are taken from the BMA's published pay scales.
How is the NHS Pension Scheme applied to doctors?
Doctors are members of the NHS Pension Scheme — 2015 CARE for most, with some senior doctors still on 1995 or 2008 sections. Contribution rates are tiered by pensionable pay and the tier boundaries match the Agenda for Change scheme. Switch between schemes in the Pension dropdown.

Are weekend and night supplements included?
Not yet — the 2016 contract supplements (weekend allowance, 37% night enhancement, on-call availability, additional hours) are coming in a future update. For now the calculator handles basic pay, pension, tax, NI, student loan, salary sacrifice and professional fees only. Supplements that are typically pensionable (weekend allowance, on-call availability) and those that aren't (night enhancement, additional hours) will be modelled separately.
How does the calculator handle salaried GPs?
Select "Salaried GP" from the grade dropdown and pick Minimum or Maximum within the BMA model range. Adjust weekly hours below (default 40h = full-time hospital; GPs work in sessions of 4h 10m each, with 9 sessions/week being full-time on the BMA model). A dedicated sessions input is on the roadmap.
What tax rates apply in Scotland?
Scotland has its own income tax rates with 6 bands: Starter (19%), Basic (20%), Intermediate (21%), Higher (42%), Advanced (45%) and Top (48%). The thresholds differ from England/Wales/NI. National Insurance rates remain the same UK-wide. The calculator applies them automatically when Scotland is selected.
Is this calculator official?
No. This is an independent estimation tool. It is not affiliated with the NHS, NHS Employers, the BMA or any government body. Pay figures are taken from the BMA's public pay-scale pages — verify with your payroll department before relying on take-home figures for major financial decisions.
How does salary sacrifice affect my doctor pay?
Salary sacrifice reduces your gross pay before tax and National Insurance, saving you money. Many NHS Trusts offer salary-sacrifice schemes (lease car, cycle to work, additional pension, childcare vouchers). If your Trust payrolls benefits in kind, income tax is calculated on your pre-sacrifice salary while NI and pension use the post-sacrifice amount.
What student loan plan am I on?
Plan 1 is for English/Welsh students who started before September 2012, Plan 2 for those after. Plan 4 is for Scottish students, Plan 5 for English students from September 2023. Postgraduate loans are repaid alongside other plans. Each has different repayment thresholds and rates.
Are Annual Allowance / Lifetime Allowance issues modelled?
Not currently. Senior doctors should seek specialist financial advice on pension tax — Annual Allowance breaches around tax-free pension growth can produce large tax bills that this calculator does not model. The figures shown here represent income tax and NI on salary only.
